Last Epoch: How to Craft and Slam Perfect Legendary Endgame Gear
If you’ve played Last Epoch long enough to reach endgame, you already know that the difference between a good item and a godly one often comes down to mastering the game’s deep crafting system. So, that’s exactly what we’re doing here — crafting, slamming, and showing every step of the thought process behind building perfect Legendary gear. A lot of Last Epoch gold will help you.
Understanding the Goal
Before you start hammering away at random items, the first step is to understand what you’re crafting and why. Every successful item begins with a clear goal. For this guide, we’re working on an off-hand item — specifically, a Stygian Coal — for my next build: a Lich.
The best way to approach any craft is to identify the key affixes that matter most for your build. For this example, I’m aiming for critical strike multiplier and spell critical strike chance as prefixes, with elemental resistance and void resistance as suffixes. These stats will give massive offensive potential while maintaining a little survivability.
If you’re lucky enough to find a Stygian Coal with Legendary Potential (LP), that’s where the real magic happens. The number of LPs (1-4) determines how many affixes from your exalted item will be absorbed into the Legendary when you fuse them. A 4-LP item gives you four chances to hit the jackpot — but even 2-LP items can be extremely powerful when optimized.
Preparing the Exalted Base
Now that we know what we’re after, let’s look at the crafting process. I’ve got a 2-LP Stygian Coal and an exalted catalyst to merge it with. The exalted item needs those same key affixes we mentioned earlier. When I inspect the catalyst, I notice it already has a tier 1 critical multiplier, a tier 7 elemental resistance, and a tier 1 cold resistance. That’s not perfect, but it’s workable.
At this stage, I add spell critical strike to fill the empty prefix slot — this gives us the right four affixes to start working with. Always craft using a Glyph of Hope to reduce the chance of losing forging potential, since once your forging potential hits zero, your item is done — you can’t make further upgrades.
If you manage to craft strong prefixes without burning all your potential, you can later use a Rune of Creation to duplicate the item, letting you attempt multiple Legendary slams later. That’s key to maximizing your odds when fusing.
Using Runes of Havoc and Tier Shuffling
Next comes one of the most misunderstood parts of Last Epoch crafting: Runes of Havoc. These shuffle the tiers of affixes on your item, which can move those tier 7 stats to where you want them. In this case, I want my tier 7 affix to land on one of the prefixes — preferably the crit multiplier.
Using Havoc is a gamble. You can completely ruin your item or hit the miracle combination. After a couple of tries (and some bad luck), I finally hit the dream: tier 7 crit multiplier and tier 4 spell crit chance sitting perfectly on the prefixes. It’s always a good idea to celebrate the small victories — this one’s big.
Balancing Risk and Reward
Once the tiers are set, you’ll have to decide whether to keep pushing or stop. Upgrading a stat could improve your item or completely drain your remaining forging potential. For example, increasing my spell crit from tier 4 to tier 5 carries a small risk but a big potential payoff. If you’re in softcore, take risks. If you’re playing hardcore or have only one version of an item, play it safe.
If you have leftover potential and want to boost resistance, you can use sealing to remove an unwanted affix temporarily. Many players think you can’t slam an item with sealed affixes, but that’s not true — you just can’t slam the sealed ones themselves. Sealing gives you space to add more valuable stats like resistances before finalizing your item.
Refinement and Duplication
Before slamming, check the numerical values of your most important affix. For example, my T7 crit multiplier is sitting at 52 out of a possible 58. If I have spare potential, I can use a Rune of Refinement to push it closer to the top of the range. When you’re satisfied, use a Rune of Creation to duplicate the item if possible. That way, you’ll have two chances to hit the perfect Legendary outcome during slamming.
The Slam: Turning Exalted Into Legendary
Now it’s time for the real test — the slam. To fuse your items, you’ll need a Temporal Sanctum Key. Right-click the key, open the dungeon, and progress to the boss, Julra. Always run Tier 2 or higher because only at Tier 2 and above can you guarantee one affix to transfer from the exalted item.
Check your item’s level requirement to determine which dungeon tier you need. For instance:
Tier 2 handles items up to level 65
Tier 3 handles up to level 75
Tier 4 handles any item
After defeating Julra, interact with the Eternity Cache. Place your unique item and your exalted item inside. You’ll see a drop-down list that lets you pick which affix will definitely transfer over. Choose wisely — usually your most valuable stat, like crit multiplier. Then, it’s time to slam.
If luck is on your side, you’ll hit the miracle combination — say, both crit multi and spell crit transferring. If not, remember that creation rune copy we made earlier? That’s your second shot.
A Few More Crafting Examples
The same logic applies to other gear. Take boots, for example — every build benefits from movement speed, cooldown recovery, and hybrid health. If your exalted boots lack movement speed, just add it and use Havoc to shuffle it up to tier 7. Even a single-LP pair can become perfect since movement speed is guaranteed transfer.
Or, if you’re struggling to find specific shards — like levels of Judgment for a Paladin — update your loot filter. Add a rule to highlight “highly needed affixes you’re low on.” This makes farming shards much faster.

Crafting and slamming in Last Epoch is both an art and a science — a mix of math, luck, and game knowledge. Always start with a clear goal, use your Glyphs and Runes wisely, and remember: you don’t need 4-LP items to make something powerful.
