Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5 Tornado Shaman Guide

Patch 0.5 made Tornado Shaman significantly stronger through the interaction between Tornado and The Taming ring. By creating Shocked Ground, Burning Ground, and Chilled Ground simultaneously, Tornado gains damage from all three elemental effects, turning it into a powerful skill for both campaign progression and endgame mapping.

Step 1: Start the Campaign with Plant Skills

At the beginning of Act 1, use Entangle, Frost Bomb, and Volcano as your primary skills.

For bosses, charge Volcano fully, cast Frost Bomb to apply exposure, then spam Entangle while Volcano deals damage. Link Burgeon to Volcano and Upheaval to Entangle as soon as those support gems become available.

Equip a wand with spell damage whenever possible and use a Rattling Scepter in your off-hand to gain skeletons that help clear enemies and increase damage against marked targets.

Step 2: Add Pounce and Prepare for Weapon Swapping

After obtaining a Tier 3 skill gem, select Pounce and equip a Talisman.

Use Pounce before boss fights to apply Predator's Mark. The mark increases damage when enemies are surrounded, making it effective alongside your skeletons.

Assign Pounce and the Talisman to Weapon Set 2 while keeping Entangle, Frost Bomb, and Volcano on Weapon Set 1.

Step 3: Unlock Thunderstorm and Fragments of the Past

After defeating the King of the Mists and the Executioner, obtain Thunderstorm and Fragments of the Past.

Thunderstorm provides additional damage, extends vine effects, and applies Shock. Fragments of the Past creates the blue volcano that scales from your Talisman's physical damage.

Upgrade your Talisman regularly throughout the campaign because higher physical damage directly increases the blue volcano's damage output.

For bosses:

Cast Frost Bomb.

Place Volcano.

Summon Fragments of the Past.

Cast Thunderstorm.

Use Entangle repeatedly.

Step 4: Build Around Damage and Duration

During Acts 1 and 2, prioritize passive nodes that provide:

Spell damage

Attack damage

Skill duration

Area of effect

Elemental damage

Rush toward Wild Surge Incantation for a large damage increase and reduced mana costs. Offset the reduced duration penalty by taking nearby duration nodes.

For gear, focus primarily on armor-based equipment to improve survivability.

Step 5: Strengthen Entangle in Act 2

When Tier 2 support gems become available, add Accelerated Growth to Entangle.

This causes overgrown plants to explode, greatly improving clear speed and boss damage. Add Mark of Death to Pounce so physical damage can help break enemy armor during longer fights.

Continue upgrading your Talisman whenever a stronger version becomes available.

Step 6: Complete Your First Ascendancy

After finishing the first Trial, ascend into Shaman.

Invest your initial Ascendancy points into elemental damage, exposure bonuses, and additional elemental damage gained from attacks and spells.

At level 22, unlock Mana Tempest and add it to your boss setup.

Boss sequence:

Use Pounce.

Cast Frost Bomb.

Summon Fragments of the Past.

Activate Mana Tempest.

Place Volcano.

Cast Thunderstorm.

Spam Entangle.

This setup provides strong single-target damage while maintaining manageable mana costs.

Step 7: Add Thrashing Vines in Act 3

At the start of Act 3, obtain Thrashing Vines.

Support it with Controlled Destruction and Accelerated Growth. During boss encounters, place Thrashing Vines before using your existing damage rotation.

The updated sequence becomes:

Cast Thrashing Vines.

Use Entangle.

Cast Thunderstorm.

Summon Fragments of the Past.

Place Volcano.

Activate Mana Tempest.

This creates multiple overlapping damage sources and improves boss damage considerably.

Step 8: Transition Into a Spirit-Based Setup

After your second Ascendancy, begin preparing for the Tornado build.

Equip:

Threaded Light

Unfolding Dawn

A wand with +levels to physical spell skills

These items provide large amounts of Spirit and spell damage.

Activate Wolfpack and Blasphemy, then place Elemental Weakness inside Blasphemy to automatically weaken nearby enemies.

Step 9: Obtain The Taming Ring

Before switching to Tornado, acquire The Taming ring.

You can either buy the ring directly with POE Currency or combine the required rings at the forge inside the Azarian Ranges map.

The build relies on this ring because it allows Tornado to gain damage from multiple elemental ground effects simultaneously, which is the main source of its damage scaling.

Step 10: Switch to Tornado at Level 42

Once you reach level 42 and can equip The Taming, replace your plant skills with Tornado.

Recommended supports:

Swift Affliction

Considered Casting

Catalyzing Elements

Magnified Area

Swift Affliction is particularly effective because Tornado deals non-ailment damage over time.

Keep Thunderstorm and Fragments of the Past in the build, as both continue contributing damage and elemental effects.

Step 11: Change Your Passive Tree

After swapping to Tornado, remove plant-focused and physical-damage nodes.

Invest instead into:

Spell damage

Elemental damage

Exposure effectiveness

Skill duration

Resistance reduction

Tornado scales primarily through spell damage, gem levels, and Spirit rather than physical damage conversion.

Step 12: Upgrade the Build at Level 50

At level 50, respec Ascendancy points into Wisdom of the Magi.

Obtain an Idol of Maxarius, which grants an additional Storm Skill limit and allows you to maintain two Tornadoes.

Also upgrade your wand with spell-level bonuses whenever possible, since Tornado gains significant damage from additional gem levels.

Step 13: Improve Exposure and Curses

As you progress into higher-level content, increase exposure effectiveness through passive points.

Add:

Temporal Chains

Elemental Weakness

Blasphemy

This combination slows enemies and reduces their elemental resistances, allowing Tornado to deal more consistent damage.

Step 14: Finish the Endgame Setup

At higher levels, add:

Elemental Conflux

Eternal Rage

Third Ascendancy bonuses that convert Rage into spell damage

Elemental Conflux continuously boosts elemental damage, while Rage provides an additional multiplier to spell damage.

For boss fights:

Cast Frost Bomb.

Place Thunderstorm.

Summon Fragments of the Past.

Cast Tornado.

Refresh Tornado when necessary.

For mapping:

Move through the map continuously.

Cast Tornado into each pack.

Use Thunderstorm on tougher enemies.

Summon Fragments of the Past against rares and bosses.

Keep Tornado active while advancing.

Following these steps allows the build to transition smoothly from campaign leveling into endgame mapping while fully utilizing the powerful Tornado and The Taming interaction introduced in Patch 0.5.
